My Blue Period in the Hamptons

My cousin told me that the best time to paint in the Hamptons was after Labor Day. The tourists are gone and the weather is still fine. Who am I to question his wisdom and generous offer of his home for almost 10 days?

So, after a brief visit with my daughter in NYC, I packed my paints, loaded up my rental car and drove just 2 hours to the beautiful little town of Bridgehampton. Here’s a list of the many sights I could have painted had I stayed for as long as I really wanted to:

Acres of pumpkin fields

Harbors everywhere

Lobster roll stands with striped awnings by the side of the road

Lavender fields!

Flowers everywhere proclaiming--You’re not in Arizona anymore!

Beaches

Wild surf

Pink and purple and orange sunsets, especially on the beaches

Farm stands with mouth watering fruits and vegetables

Barns, barns, barns!

Beautiful cedar clad cottages, large and small

Tractors

Horses

Wineries

Ponds

Corn fields

Huge trees, although many lost their leaves early from hurricane damage

Churches and church steeples

After my recent trip to Italy, where orange was the predominant color, I was struck by the contrast here: I loved the blues and greens of this part of our country and noted that the quality of light was cooler over all. So, with a cheeky nod to Picasso, I guess you could call this my Blue Period.

I’ve included 3 thumbnails here of paintings from this trip and all six can be seen in Selected Works. Six paintings out of the twelve I did while there. Hope you enjoy a small taste of this marvelous American paradise.

Looking at the above list I guess I’d better get back to work....let me know if you have any requests from the list!
